Telephone Interviews – Your Goal is to Secure a Face-to-Face Meeting

Telephone interviews are often used by employers as a pre-screening tool to narrow the field of potential candidates, or to confirm an applicant’s suitability for an out-of-town position before incurring the expense of bringing them in for an interview.

While more impersonal than in-person meetings, phone interviews offer several advantages. You can write down your career highlights / specific accomplishments beforehand and refer to these notes during the conversation. You can also organize your thoughts while your interviewer is speaking and jot down points or questions as they come to mind. Just remember, the goal of telephone interviews is to prompt a face-to-face interview.

Phone Interview Tips

Here are just a few phone interview tips to help you prepare.

  • Be ready for an interview any time. Have your resume, a pen and paper and your research / prep notes easily accessible.

  • If you receive a call on your cell phone, ask if you can call them back on a land line for reliable reception.

  • Remove all distractions—TV, music, children—and give the interviewer your undivided attention.

  • Follow proper phone etiquette – don’t eat, drink or chew gum.

Phone Interview Questions

Phone interview questions are typically similar to those asked in face-to-face meetings, although the exchange is meant to be more brief. Be concise in your responses, yet fully answer the questions. Ideally, during telephone interviews, you should impress, but leave the interviewer wanting more. Here are some examples of phone interview questions:

  • Why did you apply for the job?

  • What do you know about the company/position?

  • What are you looking for in a career move?

  • Why are you considering leaving your current job?

  • What has been your greatest accomplishment in your career?

  • What are you strengths/weaknesses?
