An Important Component of Your Resume: References

Compiling a list of resume references is an important step in preparing your job search tool kit. While you don’t want to include your references on your resume, you should have a reference list ready in the event that a prospective employer wishes to confirm your credentials with a third party.

Reference List for Resume – Who to Ask

So, who should appear on a reference list for a resume? Choose at least three people who can vouch for your professional conduct and performance. Consider a former employer, senior colleagues, professors, customers, vendors or volunteer supervisors—anyone you can trust to put in a good word for you. Whenever possible, use past supervisors and managers. If you are in a management role, you may also want to include at least one reference from a member of your team.

Always ensure you have spoken to your references to request permission and to provide notice that they may receive a phone call.
